About Me

Describe Yourself:My name is Savo Heleta. Originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, I have lived on three continents in the last decade – Europe, North America, and Africa.
I am the author of "Not My Turn to Die: Memoirs of a Broken Childhood in Bosnia" (AMACOM Books, New York, March 2008). In the book, I give a testimony about the suffering in my childhood during the Bosnian civil war in the 1990s and demonstrate personal struggle and search for the strength to choose peace, reconciliation, and hope over hatred and revenge.
Financial Times’ review notes that “This powerful book shows how difficult it is to make peace after a conflict, not least peace among neighbors.”
The International Crisis Group calls the book “a gripping and compelling story of the nobility of good and banality of evil… a fascinating piece of memoir literature from Bosnia.”
Andrew Himes, the executive director of the Voices in Wartime Education Project says the book is “an eloquent testimony to the human capacity for compassion and forgiveness. Only by hearing the personal stories, like Savo’s, from witnesses to the terrible trauma and lasting damage of war, can we imagine how to create a culture of peace.”
I hold a Masters degree in Conflict Transformation and Management from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. My primary research interests are conflicts within states, deep-rooted conflicts, conflicts over basic human needs, and negotiations that can bring lasting peace.
In the last two years, I have conducted a number of research projects and written and published extensively about Sudan and Darfur in newspapers and magazines in Sudan, Europe, and the United States. My research papers on Darfur and Sudan have been listed on the website of the Chr. Michelsen Institute, an independent center for research on international development and policy from Norway, as some of the essential readings on the current conflict in Darfur.

Leah Christensen, Aug 21, 2009, 12:12PM EDTYou're more than welcome, Savo.
I checked my "sent" messages, and saw that I did indeed give you the right address. When things happen with mail, I started to get paranoied about typos, but evidently, that was not the case. Walker told me that he used to have problems mailing stuff from South Africa when he used to work there, so we're hoping it was just a small delay. I was hoping to have one for the book that I gave to Brenda, but it didn't work out that way. Oh well, that's how the postal system works sometimes. I will be sure and let you know as soon as anything arrives.
Everyone I've shown your book to has been extremely impressed and wants to read it. That's going to make Christmas shopping very easy for me this year. :) Did you see the video I posted of Brenda opening it? :) -
Leah Christensen, Aug 20, 2009, 9:43PM EDTHello Savo.

She absolutely loved it, and had mentioned that she wanted a copy, so I bought her one.
I see that Gather didn't properly sign me out when I posted from Brenda's place, so her ping appeared to come to me. Here is the link to her profile.

Leah Christensen, Aug 18, 2009, 12:59AM EDTHello Savo-I am Leah's friend, Brenda, and when she spoke of your book, I was looking to buy it in the future to read it. Imagine my surprise when no only SHE showed up at my birthday dinner in Ohio from Canada without warning, but that her gift to me was YOUR BOOK!! I have just started to read it and will get back to you when I have finished. It has started off well!
I have written you before her, or our other mutual friends who were there, since I saw your friend invite, and here I am. Maybe I won't tell them!! I hope you much success with the book sales and look forward to reading it.
